Frequently Asked Questions
The decision to get a tattoo is a big one – particularly if it’s your first; you might have questions about selecting tattoo designs, finding just the right artist, and more. Here are some FQA’s designed to help you through the process and make the decision that’s right for you.
What kinds of tattoo designs can I choose from?
The possibilities are endless, when it comes to choosing a design you have to think about what inspired you to want one in the first place. You can also do a quick Google search for tattoo design, print the ones you like and use them as ideas or “reference” to design your own tattoo. At Insight Studios our specialty is custom tattooing. The selection of “flash” (pre-drawn artwork) is extremely limited but available to build ideas upon.
With the skill and talent of the artists working at Insight Studios, there is never a reason to “pick a design off the wall.” A tattoo is something personal that deserves personal attention in creating the tattoo. We focus on making each and every tattoo as unique as the person getting it. The only way you will ever have the same tattoo done at Insight Studios as someone else is if it was planned that way. You never have to worry about seeing someone with your tattoo if you get it custom designed for you by an artist.
Can I bring my own design?
Just about any design you can think of can be made into a beautiful tattoo. You are more than welcome to bring in your own design. If you already know what you want, great, it is very simple to convey your idea to our artists. We also have portfolios and artwork hanging on the walls. We want our customers to feel comfortable about getting a professional tattoo or piercing from us.
The easiest way is with a picture. It doesn’t matter what the picture is on (keychain, t-shirt, book, drawing, CD cover, sticker, etc.). Even if you can’t draw, our artists still love to do the custom work. Just describe it well or even bring in a stick drawing. We can turn it into the tattoo you imagined.
Can you fix my old tattoo?
Old tattoos can be easily reworked into a fresh work of art. Color can be added to brighten your existing tattoo or with a little creativity even turned into a completely new tattoo. Why go through life with “Wilma” tattooed on your arm if you love “Betty”?
How much does it hurt to get a tattoo?
Each person is different when it comes to getting a tattoo. Some people are better with the discomfort assoicated with a tattoo more than others. Different areas of the body are usually more sensitive than others. Of course, depending on your tattoo design and location, the amount of discomfort can vary to some degree.
Generally speaking, tattooing over bone – where there’s little flesh or fat – hurts a bit more. So getting a tattoo on the fleshy part of your arm probably won’t hurt much at all, but directly over your ankle bone or collar bone may be more painful – though still bearable.
Is it safe to get a tattoo?
Every artist at Insight attends an annual bloodborne pathogens and principles of infection control training course, which meets the requirements of OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.1030.
Insight Studios is one of the only tattoo/ piercing studios that offers weekly autoclave spore-testing in Chicago. The results are kept on-site to ensure that our equipment is sterilized using the highest standards in the tattoo/piercing industry. Everything is disposed of after every tattoo, and the entire area sanitized. New needles are used for each and every customer; there is no chance of contracting a blood-borne disease. Our tattoo artists will be glad to set your mind at rest by showing you all the equipment they will be using before the tattooing begins.
How much does it cost?
Tattoo prices vary according to the size and tattoo design. Of course, a larger and more complex design will cost more than a smaller, simpler one. Prices vary though, so the best thing to do is to ask. Bring your design, or idea in and we will be able to quote you a price right then and there.
Even if you are not an artist, sketch something up so WE can get a better idea of what YOU want for your tattoo. When requesting a quote for your tattoo, it is important to COME IN to the studio or send an email. We dont give prices over the phone since there are too many factors that play a part in the pricing of a tattoo. Size, location, color, time ALL play a part in the process or pricing.
How old do I have to be to get a tattoo?
You must be at least 18 (eighteen) years of age to get tattooed anywhere in the state of Illinois. If you plan on getting a tattoo at Insight Studios make sure you have a state issued photo ID with your name and your photo on it ie: drivers license, state id, passport.NO ONE will be tattooed without proper identification. There are absolutely NO EXCEPTIONS to this. Illinois state law says you MUST be AT LEAST 18 (eighteen) years of age.
When should I not get a tattoo?
You should not get tattooed if you are pregnant. At Insight Studios, we will NOT tattoo/pierce ANYONE who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you’re sick, wait until you get better..
